Bye Bye Paci!

I am a little delayed in writing about it but Brady passed a big milestone recently...he said bye bye to his paci on May 7th!!!  Yay!

I honestly had been very worried about this transition because he, and us, have been very attached to it and he used it a lot.  He hasn't had it at daycare for about 6 months so I guess I should take that back because truly he was going all day, including naps, without it.  However, from the time he got in the car to go home until we went to bed he was usually wanting it.

With Chase it took awhile but we got rid of his by saying we were mailing it away to the babies who needed it and it worked like a charm.  I really didn't know how we were going to tackle this with Brady.

Enter our wonderful and amazing dentist!  At Brady's 1st dentists appointment last month she had told me that Brady's teeth looked great except he needed to get rid of the paci because his teeth were starting to move.  She told Brady he needed to stop using it and she told me that preferably tonight would be the end of it.  I looked at her like she was crazy and thought, "Haha, yea right tonight!"  After school though I decided to try and go with it and everytime he asked for it I would tell him the dentist said he couldn't have it and he said, "OK."   WHAT???  Hold on, that's it?!?!  It wasn't really that easy was it?

So the rest of that evening he was fine with it but the true test would come at bedtime.  We climbed into bed that night, read books and he said he couldn't have his paci because the dentist said No and he went to sleep!!!  Amazing!

Craig and I weren't convinced and thought maybe it was beginners luck but till this day Brady has not gone back to his paci!!  Yay!  The only minor meltdowns he has had for it have been about 5 seconds long and not a big deal at all.  I can't believe we whizzed through that transition so easily, whew....  On a side note he has found a paci laying around on 2 separate occasions and he puts it in his mouth and laughs and then gives it to us saying "I don't need no stinking paci!"  Lol, that is what we used to tell him all the time :)

The only issue we have seen as a result of getting rid of the paci is calming Brady down.  When he is upset and throwing a tantrum, it takes a lot longer to talk to him and calm his down then it did to pop his paci in his mouth.  Also, at bedtime the paci used to calm him down and he went to bed pretty easily.  Now it is hit or miss...he gets super hyper as he's getting in bed and sometimes he goes to bed easily but other nights we battle with him for up to an hour to go to bed.  He climbs out over and over, climbs onto Chase's top bunk, gets toys, lays on the ground and thinks he is hilarious.  We don't think it is so hilarious but we are getting through it :)  He is a very different child than Chase so learning to parent his personality is something Craig and I are working on everyday.

I'm still amazed at how easy he said goodbye to his paci though - what a relief!
